Barrington brush fire

Throughout the north and northwest suburbs, over the past week or so, the sky has been filled with random smoke plumes, mostly from widespread prescribed prairie burns. While most of these burns are carefully managed and permitted, some have occurred without proper authorization, prompting emergency responses from local fire departments. On Tuesday, while driving through the northwest suburbs, Larry Shapiro followed one such plume to a prairie fire that was not being supervised. A photo attached shows the scene upon arrival of the first Barrington Fire Department units. The fire was burning along a line in the middle of a large field, with dense smoke already beginning to clear. The image captures the initial stage of the incident, as reported by Larry Shapiro. An embedded video (though currently unavailable) would have shown the fire's progression, but based on the descriptions, it was contained quickly. Barrington crews were called to a prairie fire behind homes on Old Dundee Road, west of Sutton (Route 59). As they approached, the responding units requested additional support due to the size of the smoke plume. Upon arrival, they found a large field that had already burned significantly, but there was still enough fuel left to pose a risk if wind conditions changed. Another photo shows the flame heights, which were impressive, though the fuel load wasn’t enough to sustain the fire for long. Barrington’s new IHC/US Tanker was on the scene, along with two engines, a quint, an ambulance, a battalion chief, and a brush unit. The fire was controlled without any incidents, remaining within the grasslands and not threatening nearby homes. A brush truck arrived later and entered the field to douse any remaining spot fires and secure the perimeter. A final image highlights how close the fire came to residential areas, showing the proximity of the flames to a homeowner’s yard. The shot also illustrates the vastness of the field, with much of the area untouched by the fire. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of proper fire management and the need for vigilance, especially during dry seasons when prairie fires can spread quickly. Fortunately, in this case, the fire was handled efficiently, and no property was damaged. A small gallery of photos is available for further viewing.
