Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
Two people were affected by severe conditions in Lake Michigan on Sunday, with one man losing his life and a woman still missing after a swim at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park.
At around 9:15 a.m., emergency crews responded to the beach after 10 swimmers from an independent cold-weather group entered the water from the boat launch area. The rough conditions caused two of them to go missing, prompting a large-scale search operation.
A 46-year-old man from Itasca was found unresponsive in the water and pulled out by fire department divers. He was taken to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His name has not been released at this time.
A 52-year-old Elgin woman remains missing as of Sunday evening. Due to the high waves and dangerous conditions, boats were unable to enter the water. Firefighters conducted searches from the shore, while a Coast Guard helicopter arrived at approximately 11:45 a.m. to assist in the effort.
By 4 p.m., the aircrew suspended its search over a roughly 10-square-mile area near where the woman was last seen. However, Highland Park officials confirmed that the search is ongoing, and police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline have been asked to keep an eye out for the missing swimmer.
The National Weather Service issued a warning earlier that day about strong winds reaching nearly 40 mph and waves up to 10 feet high along the lakefront. Water temperatures were reported to be around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, making the conditions even more treacherous for swimmers.
If you have any information about the missing woman, please contact the Highland Park Police Department at (847) 432-7730.
