Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
On Sunday, a man from Itasca lost his life and a woman from Elgin went missing after encountering severe conditions while swimming in Lake Michigan.
Emergency services were called around 9:15 a.m. to Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park, where 10 swimmers from an independent cold-water group entered the water from the boat launch area. The group faced strong currents and high waves, leading two individuals to go missing at the scene.
A 46-year-old man from Itasca was found unresponsive in the water by fire department divers and rushed to Highland Park Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. His name has not been released yet.
A 52-year-old Elgin woman is still missing as of Sunday evening. Due to the dangerous conditions, boats could not enter the water, so firefighters conducted searches from the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter arrived at around 11:45 a.m. to assist in the search.
By 4 p.m., the aircrew suspended its search over a roughly 10-square-mile area near where the woman was last seen. Officials in Highland Park confirmed that the search is ongoing, and police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline have been asked to keep an eye out for the missing swimmer.
The National Weather Service issued a warning on Sunday afternoon about strong winds reaching nearly 40 mph and waves up to 10 feet high along the lakefront. Water temperatures were around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, making the conditions even more treacherous.
If you have any information about the missing swimmer, please contact the Highland Park Police Department at (847) 432-7730.
