2019 Sustainability Report: Working With Our Customers and Partners to Achieve Sustainable Outcomes in the Decade Ahead

The pace of change in our world is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. Climate change and growing inequality are not just challenges—they're urgent calls to action. The global pandemic has reshaped our lives, disrupted economies, and exposed the fragility of systems we once thought were resilient. Meanwhile, ongoing protests and social movements remind us that racial injustice and structural inequality still plague many societies.

As we step into this new decade, it's more important than ever to reaffirm our dedication to building a sustainable, equitable, and resilient future for everyone. In our annual Sustainability Report, our CEO, Andrew Anagnost, emphasizes that "the challenges we face—pandemics, climate change, inequality, and political instability—will test the resilience of businesses, countries, ecosystems, and our global community. While few of us could have predicted the shutdown of the global economy due to the novel coronavirus, it’s clear we could have been better prepared. This crisis has served as a wake-up call for leaders everywhere."

This year’s report reflects on over a decade of progress in sustainability and outlines our vision for supporting customers in achieving their own environmental goals. It's not just about what we’ve done—it's about how we can continue to lead and collaborate with others to make a real difference.

Driving Climate Action Together

In 2019, we achieved the science-based greenhouse gas reduction target we set over a decade ago. Our carbon footprint has shrunk by 43% thanks to energy efficiency improvements, powering our offices and cloud services with 100% renewable energy, and purchasing Gold Standard carbon offsets for business travel and major conferences.

We’ve also committed to becoming fully climate neutral starting in fiscal year 2021. These efforts not only help us meet our goals but also equip us to support our customers in their own sustainability journeys.

Additionally, we’ve worked to encourage stronger climate policies by sharing our technology and customer stories with policymakers at events like COP25, helping to shape the environment in which our customers can lead in the low-carbon economy.

Building a More Inclusive Future

We are deeply committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and belonging across all levels of our organization. This spring, our CEO made every employee an owner of the company through stock grants, reinforcing our shared purpose and commitment to equity. We’re also aiming to contribute 1% of operating margin to the Autodesk Foundation, supporting entrepreneurs and innovators who are driving positive change in underserved communities around the world.

Empowering Customers Through Innovation

While we take pride in our own progress, our greatest impact comes from helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals. Tools like Revit and Fusion 360 allow them to design more efficiently, reduce waste, and build resilient systems that adapt to an uncertain future.

Discover how our customers are making a difference with the tools and technologies we provide:

  • EC3: We've continued to invest in collaborative innovation, working with customers to develop the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), integrated with BIM 360. These tools help reveal hidden environmental impacts in construction materials, speeding up the shift to a low-carbon industry.
  • BLOX: A family-owned firm based in Birmingham, Alabama, used BIM 360 to double efficiency and quality, transforming into a national leader in hospital construction.
  • (D/P/S): Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, an architecture firm in New Mexico, saved a client $2.5 million over 30 years using net-zero solutions powered by Revit and Insight.
  • Honda: The Japanese automaker leveraged generative design and 3D printing to create a crankshaft that was 50% lighter, improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.
  • Rebound Technologies: Based in Denver, Rebound developed a groundbreaking cooling system that could boost efficiency by 35%, potentially cutting 681 million metric tons of GHG emissions annually by 2050. Their solution, built using Fusion 360, helps companies speed up frozen food production while lowering costs and energy use.

Creating a sustainable and inclusive economy won’t be easy or straightforward. But with each customer facing unique challenges, our strategy is to grow together, ensuring that they become the leaders of this decade—designing and building a better, more resilient, and equitable future for all.
