**From Mike Lopina's Field Report**
I was driving north on I-294 earlier today when I noticed something unusual. Up ahead, near Schiller Park, I could see what looked like smoke rising from a building. As I got closer, I picked up snippets of chatter over the radio about a fire that had broken out on the roof. The address is 10511 West United Parkway, and the structure is a single-story, non-combustible commercial building that measures roughly 350 feet by 150 feet.
By the time I arrived—about 10 minutes later—the fire seemed to be under control. From the highway, it had appeared as though this might turn into a major incident, but the firefighters did an incredible job containing it quickly. It turned out to be a relatively small fire that originated on a rooftop HVAC unit and spread slightly to the roof deck. Thankfully, the situation never escalated beyond that point.
The first responders who showed up were impressive. Schiller Park sent out Engine 5, Tower 5, Ambulance 5, and Battalion 5. They were joined by units from neighboring departments including Franklin Park’s Truck 2, Leyden’s Quint 133, Norwood Park’s Engine 101, and Franklin Park’s Battalion 490. The teamwork was fantastic, and everyone worked tirelessly despite the intense heat.
What struck me most was how well-coordinated everything was. The crews managed to get the flames under control before they could do much damage. It’s clear these firefighters are highly trained and dedicated to their work. Kudos to them for keeping the situation safe and minimizing any potential risk to life or property.
Attached are some photos I took while waiting for things to wrap up. These images give you a sense of the scale of the building and the intensity of the fire when it was still active. A big thanks to Mike Lopina for capturing these moments and sharing his observations.

This experience reminded me just how crucial our local fire departments are in protecting our communities. It’s always reassuring to see such professionalism and efficiency in action.
