This message is from Drew Gresik. He just sent me some updates and photos from the incident that happened on Wednesday. It all went down around 11:30 AM at 5039 South Elizabeth Street. Engine 50 and Truck 18 were the first ones on the scene and they quickly called for a Still and Box due to the severity of the situation—a fully involved two-and-a-half-story wooden structure. Drew got there about 30 minutes after the primary search operations had finished, and only about 15 minutes after 2-2-5 put out the Box alarm. Here are his photos.
Engine 84 (using D547) and Engine 49 were positioned in Sector 1 alongside Truck 18. Truck 18 climbed onto the roof to set things up. Engine 50 was stationed in the alley next to the adjacent building at 5041 South Elizabeth. Other units that responded to the call included Ambulances 1 and 57, Truck 51, Engine 39, Command Van 2-7-3, and an Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner.
I’ve attached some of Drew’s photos below. They really capture the intensity and scale of the operation. In one shot, you can see Paramedic Field Chief 4-5-8 on the scene. Another shows Engine 49 with its lines deployed. There’s also a great image of Truck 18 up on the roof. One of the more interesting shots is of Engine 39 paired with Tower Ladder 39, both mounted on HME chassis—pretty rare to see that combination. There’s also a photo of Engine 50 with its lines off, showing how they worked to control the fire. And finally, there’s a powerful image of the house after the flames were extinguished.
It’s always incredible to see how these teams work together under pressure. Drew does a fantastic job capturing it all.
