Sunday, March 10th, 2013 – This is Dan Shevlin again, reporting live from the scene of a major fire here in Chicago. I’m currently stationed at Still & Box 1223 on South Kildare Street, and things are unfolding rapidly.
The incident began just a short while ago, around 2:17 PM local time, when Engine 38 responded to reports of a fire on the second floor of a two-and-a-half-story building. The structure is an older, ordinary-style construction, which unfortunately makes it more prone to spreading flames quickly. When I arrived, the situation had already escalated significantly—fire was bursting out of the attic windows and even the rooftop “doghouses,†as they’re called.
In response to the intensity of the blaze, the Incident Commander made the call to pull everyone back to a safer distance and transitioned to a defensive firefighting strategy. Watching the firefighters coordinate under pressure was both impressive and humbling. The speed and precision with which they adapted to changing conditions were critical to ensuring safety for all involved.
I’ve attached some photos that capture the scale and urgency of the situation. These images really don’t do justice to the chaos and power of the fire, but they give you a sense of what we’re dealing with today. More pictures are available [here](link).
