Celebrating Another Year with Habitat for Humanity

We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, which has been a meaningful journey over the past year. Our collaboration has helped countless families move into safe, affordable homes and experience the joy of homeownership for the first time. That’s why we’re excited to extend our support for another year, committing $20,000 in funds and in-kind services to help even more people build a brighter future. This year, we’re going above and beyond. In addition to providing six months of free energy to families who purchase refurbished homes, we’ll be offering the same benefit to 11 new homeowners from the Cornerstone project this summer. Blue Flame Kitchen is also stepping up by offering up to 10 welcome meals to these new families—prepared by our skilled chefs to make their transition into their new homes even smoother. “We’re proud to continue supporting Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta,” said Marshall Wilmot, President of Rümi and Chief Digital Officer at ATCO. “Helping families achieve homeownership aligns perfectly with our mission to help people love where they live. It’s a powerful way to build stronger, more resilient communities.” Over the past year, we’ve made a real difference. We donated $15,000 in free energy, delivered $11,275 in home improvement services, and raised over $10,000 through community events like Winter Wonderfest, casino nights, and Neighbour Day. Rümi also supported Habitat’s first-ever Industry Build, where more than 100 volunteers came together to construct homes for the Cornerstone project. Blue Flame Kitchen was on hand to feed everyone, showing how teamwork can make a big impact. Home refurbishment plays a vital role in Habitat’s mission. At Rümi, we believe in helping people feel at home—and that starts with making sure every house is clean, safe, and welcoming. Our employees, known as Rümineers, have been instrumental in this effort. Last year, 22 of them contributed 154 volunteer hours to build two homes. Twelve will join the fall build for the Livingstone project, which includes 24 high-efficiency townhomes designed to save money on utilities for future residents. “Being part of these builds and community events is incredibly rewarding,” says Van C., a Rümineer. “It’s not just about building houses—it’s about building hope, independence, and happiness.” Homeownership isn’t just about a roof over your head; it’s about stability, security, and opportunity. Research shows that housing stability is crucial for health, education, and overall well-being—especially for children. In 2022, Habitat helped over 35 families find new homes, and more than 1,000 kids grew up in homes built by Habitat. This year, they expect 10 more families to move into refurbished homes. Despite these successes, the reality is that Canada still faces a serious affordable housing crisis. One in five Canadians spends more than half their income on housing, and in Alberta, 9.9% of households are in core housing need. In Calgary alone, over 4,000 people are waiting for affordable housing. But there’s hope. When families move from rent to homeownership, they become taxpayers and reduce their reliance on social services. Habitat partner families also show incredible generosity—60% reduce food bank use, and 70% give back through charity work. At Rümi, giving back is part of who we are. Supporting Habitat isn’t just about helping others—it’s about creating a better future for all of us. And when you help someone find a place to call home, you help make the world a little happier, one house at a time.
