Park Ridge 2-11 & EMS Box Alarm 2-12-12

The fire broke out just before 11 a.m. today at a four-story apartment building located at 500 Thames Parkway in Park Ridge. The Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic alarm and, while en route, got a call reporting smoke and flames on the top floor. The incident was quickly upgraded to a working fire, and upon arrival, Battalion 35 observed heavy fire coming from the rear of the top-floor unit. The building has three floors with 10 units each, and due to the number of people inside, a second alarm and an EMS alert were called within minutes. Despite lacking a standpipe system, Park Ridge crews deployed a 2½-inch high-rise pack, which was fed through a top-floor window into Tower 36. They then entered the fire unit and successfully brought most of the fire under control. DesPlaines Engine 62 used its deck gun to knock down the burning mansard roof before establishing a positive water supply. Morton Grove Engine 4, a quint, served as the first aerial device in the rear. Photos from the scene show the intense fire on the top floor, the use of the tower ladder for interior attack, and firefighters working to extinguish remaining hot spots on the roof. After the fire was put out, crews had to tear apart parts of the mansard roof to ensure all embers were out. A line was stretched up the ladder of Engine 4 to provide water to firefighters on the roof tackling the last remnants of the fire. Several mutual aid departments, including Norwood Park, Skokie, and Schiller Park, responded to assist. The MABAS Division 3 "Comm 3" also arrived, along with four chiefs as part of an IMAT team. Overhaul work continued in the fire unit, with firefighters carefully checking for any signs of rekindling. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro captured the event, and their photo galleries are available online. Steve also created a video of the scene, giving a real-time look at the response. The fire was contained to the original unit, with minimal damage to neighboring apartments.
