Explore the winning projects from the USA, UK, Netherlands, and India
It seems like we're constantly bombarded with negative news about the state of our global infrastructure. From crumbling roads to outdated water systems, the message is clear: something needs to change. In fact, a recent Harris Interactive poll revealed that Americans rank major infrastructure failures as their top concern when it comes to public infrastructure issues.
While it's important to highlight problems, it's just as vital to celebrate the innovative solutions that are making a real difference. These are the projects that showcase how modern technology can transform the way we design, build, and manage infrastructure. That’s exactly what the Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure Competition is all about.
In its second year, this competition—organized by Autodesk and CGarchitect—has recognized outstanding examples of Building Information Modeling (BIM) applied to civil infrastructure. The goal is to inspire others by showcasing practical, cost-effective, and inspiring projects that use cutting-edge tools to solve real-world challenges.
The 2013 winners include some truly impressive entries from around the world:

2nd Place: iNFRANEA for the Room for River Waal project in Nijmegen, Netherlands. This initiative reimagined the river's course to improve flood protection while enhancing the local environment. View the Room for River Waal project video on YouTube.
3rd Place: A collaboration between Galliford Try, Costain, and Atkins for the Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works. This project demonstrates how BIM can streamline large-scale infrastructure development. Check out the Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works – GCA video on YouTube.
Special Visualization Award: VR Real Technologies (VRRT) for their work on the DFL India Cyber City Gurgaon animation. This stunning visualization highlights the potential of digital tools in urban planning. See the Cyber City Gurgaon Visualization Award video on YouTube.
“These projects set a new standard for using BIM in infrastructure,†said Lisa Campbell, vice president of industry strategy and marketing at Autodesk. “HNTB, for example, used Autodesk technologies to create a seamless workflow from planning to construction, involving multiple stakeholders across the board.â€
The competition was judged by a panel of industry experts and received entries from a wide range of sectors, including transportation, land development, urban planning, and energy. Submissions were evaluated based on complexity, innovation, sustainability, and the overall impact of Autodesk software on the project outcome.
The winners will be celebrated at the Autodesk University 2013 conference in Las Vegas this December, where they'll also receive over $10,000 in prizes from sponsors like HP.
