40th Anniversary Memorial Service for AA Flight 191 (more)

I was scrolling through some old receipts the other day, and stumbled upon one that brought back memories I hadn't revisited in years. It was dated May 25, 1979—the day of the tragic American Airlines Flight 191 crash at O'Hare International Airport. This receipt was from Andy's Auto Repair, a place located in the area where the plane went down. My dad used to run a brake and clutch repair shop nearby, and we'd often make deliveries to Andy. On that fateful morning, he'd actually delivered parts to Andy before everything went wrong. As a high school senior at the time, I was already involved in firefighting through the local cadet program run by the Mount Prospect Fire Department. We’d learned how to assist with fires, but nothing could have prepared us for what happened that day. When I heard the call come over the radio, I thought it might be something routine like a tank farm fire—there had been a couple of those in the past decade. But as I drove closer, it became clear this was no ordinary emergency. By the time I reached the scene, just off Touhy Avenue near the K-9 unit facilities, the devastation was overwhelming. The Elk Grove Township Fire Protection District had only been operational for a few months, and they were overwhelmed. I remember watching the airport’s ARFF (Airfield Rescue and Fire Fighting) trucks race in, their sirens wailing. They smashed right through the fences surrounding the K-9 area, deploying foam and water as quickly as they could. When the smoke finally cleared, all that remained were twisted pieces of metal and debris scattered across the ground. The plane itself had been almost completely incinerated. It’s strange to think about how interconnected things can be sometimes. Just six years later, another flight named 191 would crash—this time at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. That incident ended far worse, with only 27 survivors out of 164 people aboard. Yet somehow, both crashes share this odd connection in my mind. The receipt from that day is still tucked away among my keepsakes. It serves as a reminder of a moment frozen in time—a reminder of loss, survival, and the strange ways life intersects. I’ll never know why my dad kept it hanging on the wall for so many years, but every now and then, it feels like he was holding onto more than just paper.
