40th Anniversary Memorial Service for AA Flight 191 (more)

**A Brief Video from the 40th Anniversary Memorial Service for AA Flight 191** I just watched a moving video from the 40th anniversary memorial service for American Airlines Flight 191. It's hard to believe it’s been four decades since that tragic day. Here’s a little background I found while researching for today's reflection. This next part is from Drew Smith, who shared his personal connection to the crash: --- Part of the area where Flight 191 crashed used to have several Quonset huts from the old Orchard Field, which gave O’Hare Airport its "ORD" code. One of these huts housed Andy’s Auto Repair in Des Plaines. My dad ran Lee’s Brake and Clutch, an auto parts and machine shop, and Andy was one of our regular customers. I often helped make deliveries to Andy during high school. On that fateful day, my dad actually made a delivery to Andy earlier in the morning. Fast forward to 2009, the year my dad passed away. While clearing out the shop, my brother handed me an invoice he found on a clipboard—something we used for deliveries—and asked if I knew what it was. It took me back to that day instantly. At the time, I was a high school senior getting ready to graduate. I’d recently finished the Fire Cadet program through the Mount Prospect Fire Department. Back then, if there was a fire, you could help out by using your gear or finding tasks to assist with. This situation was different. Once the main fire was extinguished, there wasn’t much left to salvage. The crash occurred in the Elk Grove Township Fire Protection District, which had only become operational a few months prior, in January of that same year. I was driving past Station 3 (now Station 63), and I noticed the fire trucks already out. The numbers 61, 71, and 81 were still in the station. At first, I thought it might be a tank farm fire like the ones we'd had in the '70s. But as I headed toward the scene on Mount Prospect Road, the fire engines from Station 3 passed me. By the time I got closer, I realized it wasn’t a tank farm fire—it was something far worse. I parked across from the Chicago PD’s K-9 facility on Touhy Avenue, right next to the crash site. From there, I saw some of the thickest smoke I’ve ever witnessed. But it didn’t last long. Before long, the ARFF (Airfield Rescue and Firefighting) rigs from O’Hare arrived at full speed. They barely slowed down before driving through the tall chain-link and barbed-wire fence around the K-9 facility and began discharging their firefighting agents. When the smoke finally cleared, the devastation was overwhelming. The area was charred, the Quonset huts and nearby vehicles reduced to piles of debris. Most of the plane’s fuselage was gone, leaving behind only a few large pieces. I won’t describe the human remains—I’ll leave that to those who need to document such details. I still keep the original invoice from that day among my keepsakes. I’ll never know why my dad kept it hanging on the wall for so many years. It’s strange how history seems to repeat itself—there was another Flight 191 crash at DFW in 1985, though in that incident, 27 out of 164 people survived. --- Attached below is a photo of the repair receipt from May 25, 1979—the very day of the American Airlines Flight 191 crash. It’s a poignant reminder of how interconnected life can be, even in tragedy. They shape who we are today.
