Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 3-16-16

From CFD Media: As I’m sitting here watching the aftermath of the fire that broke out earlier today, my mind is still racing with the details that have been unfolding. It all started at Still and Box Alarm 3336 on Berteau Avenue, where a four-unit building was hit by flames, particularly affecting the rear porches. The firefighters did an incredible job, managing to rescue two individuals and several pets from the chaos. Ambulances were quickly dispatched to the scene, with one positioned in the front and another at the rear on Berteau. Thankfully, the fire has now been brought under control, but search efforts are still ongoing. Two victims have been rescued and are currently receiving treatment. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and is being evaluated at Illinois Masonic, while others seem to be in good condition. In total, two firefighters were injured, both with minor injuries. Two residents were transported—one with minor injuries (green tag) and another with more serious but not life-threatening injuries (yellow tag). Several pets were saved, and EMS personnel even used specialized pet oxygen masks to help the animals recover. All the critters are doing well! I took some photos that really capture the intensity of the situation. There’s one image of Chicago FD Engine 124 battling the blaze, another of a brave firefighter receiving care, and another of a cat that was rescued from the smoke-filled building. You can see the determination in the firefighters’ faces as they worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control. Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger

The brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE) is a type of heat exchanger construction in which metal plates with flat surface offer an effective and efficient method of heat transfer. These plates are joined together by brazing (mainly copper), typically stainless steel. Due to the close contact between the two surfaces, there is a very high heat transfer coefficient, leading to a low overall unit size. They therefore provide much greater efficiency than a Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger.

Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers are widely used in air-conditioning and refrigeration, power generation, and other process applications. For example, within a cooling cycle, a BPHE can be used to transfer heat from one fluid to another. Typical fluids in such coils and systems are either glycol or water. In a power system, a BPHE can be used to cool oils, recirculating lubricants, fuels, and other fluids.

The major advantages of BPHE are their compact size, efficient heat transfer and minimal pressure loss. BPHEs also have low maintenance requirements and a long service lifetime. Furthermore, because of their flat surface design, BPHEs have no patterns or turns and thus lower energy costs and minimize fouling. Finally, the material used in BPHEs makes them resist to corrosion and heat, making them ideal for high temperature and hostile environments.
