Glenview FD building new fire station headquarters

The TribLocal recently featured an article addressing concerns raised by Glenview trustees regarding the escalating costs of the new Fire Department headquarters, Station 6. This development has sparked discussions among local officials as they weigh the necessity of certain enhancements to the project. At a recent village meeting, it was revealed that the initial cost estimate for the fire station at 1215 Waukegan Road was approximately $5.44 million. However, the project's developers have indicated that the price tag might increase by roughly 15%, or about $816,000, due to additional features and expansions that were suggested by officials during prior discussions. These additions aim to accommodate future growth and operational needs. The current station is being relocated because a nearby four-story development has rendered one of the existing fire stations at 1815 Glenview Road obsolete. In the interim, a temporary fire station has been set up at the intersection of Glenview Road and Roosevelt Avenue since earlier this year. Despite the progress made so far, including the approval of a conditional use ordinance and the start of construction fencing around the site, the project’s final budget remains pending. This delay means that Glenview Fire Chief Wayne Globerger anticipates the completion date to slip a few months behind the original target of June or July 2014. Some trustees have voiced concerns about the necessity of expanding the station, which adds approximately $375,000 to the total cost. They argue that sticking to the initial budget is crucial. Trustee Deborah Karton emphasized the importance of maintaining the aesthetic quality of the building, especially given the significant effort invested in envisioning the downtown area. Chief Globerger highlighted the primary focus on functionality, explaining that the expansion provides room for three additional bunks and an extra half-bay, enabling better preparedness for potential changes, such as consolidating Fire Station 13 with the new facility. The emphasis on the building's visual appeal is directly tied to its cost. There has also been speculation about relocating the village campus near the newly constructed Glenview Police Department headquarters at 2500 E. Lake Ave. Although this idea is still under consideration, it could influence the exterior design of the fire station. Currently, the village hall does not align with the envisioned appearance of downtown Glenview. "We're working on getting quotes for both scenarios," Globerger stated. "The question remains—how elaborate do they want the exterior of the fire station to appear?" For those interested, previous updates on the new fire station can be found [here], [here], and [here]. This story continues to evolve as local officials navigate these challenges and strive to balance cost with functionality and aesthetics.
