There's a recent article in TribLocal about concerns raised by Glenview trustees regarding the escalating costs of the new fire station, Station 6, at the heart of their downtown area. It seems the original projection of $5.44 million for the facility at 1215 Waukegan Road has come under scrutiny as developers recently warned that the total might jump by approximately 15%, adding an extra $816,000 to the budget. This increase is primarily due to additional features and expansions suggested during prior village meetings.
It’s worth noting that the new fire station is being constructed on the former site of the Glenview Police Station, which was displaced to accommodate a new four-story development underway at 1815 Glenview Road. In the interim, a temporary fire station has been operating since earlier this spring at the intersection of Glenview Road and Roosevelt Avenue.
Village trustees gave their go-ahead for a conditional use ordinance, final site review, and preliminary subdivision approval back in October. Construction crews began setting up fencing around the old police station last week, readying the area for demolition. However, the final budget won't be locked in until a trustees' meeting in November. Due to this delay, Glenview Fire Chief Wayne Globerger anticipates that the construction will likely miss its initial target completion date of June or July 2014 by a few months.
Some board members have voiced doubts about the necessity of expanding the fire station, which adds roughly $375,000 to the project. They've expressed a preference to adhere to the original cost estimate. Trustee Deborah Karton emphasized the importance of the building's aesthetic, pointing out that considerable effort has been made to align it with the town's vision for its downtown area.
Chief Globerger stressed the focus on functionality, explaining that the expanded station, designed with room for three additional bunks and an extra half-bay, aims to prepare the department for future possibilities such as merging Fire Station 13 with the new headquarters. Globerger admitted that discussions about enhancing the building's visual appeal have impacted the budget, adding that there's been talk of potentially relocating the village campus near the newly constructed Glenview Police Department at 2500 E. Lake Ave.
While this concept remains under consideration, it could influence the exterior design of the fire station. Currently, the village hall doesn't quite match the trustees' ideal vision for downtown Glenview. Globerger noted that they're working on cost estimates for both scenarios: "The question is how fancy do they want the outside of the fire station to look?"

Residents are keenly watching these developments, as they not only impact the immediate safety infrastructure but also reflect broader planning decisions shaping the community's identity.
