On Monday morning (February 15), the South Side of Chicago saw its fair share of emergency activity. It all started around 1:30 PM when a tragic accident occurred on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 85th Street, resulting in a fatal pin-in collision. Just around the same time, Engine 49 responded to an automatic alarm at 43rd and Packers. They found a light haze inside an industrial building, which eventually escalated into a still and box alarm as stacks of cardboard caught fire. Fortunately, the sprinkler system managed to keep the blaze under control, and crews remained on the scene for over three hours.
Fast forward to 3:45 PM, and Engine 101 was dispatched to a working fire at 76th and Artesian. An hour later, another still and box alarm went out for a structure fire at 5141 S. Princeton. These photos were taken at that location. Due to Battalion Chiefs being occupied at the previous incidents, Battalion 7 assumed command of this fire. The situation was complicated by several frozen hydrants, and unfortunately, the fire spread to the occupied home on the "D" side. The original building was a wooden house that had been converted into a church. I couldn’t confirm this, but I believe the spare engine on-site was Engine 122, with Engine 5 serving as the other box engine.
The first image shows the fire raging from the attic of a house late at night, captured by Eric Haak. In the second photo, we see the intense Chicago fire scene illuminated under the glow of emergency lights. The third image highlights Engine 60, standing ready amidst the chaos. A firefighter’s perspective is captured in the fourth photo, showing a fire hose snaking through the snow-covered ground. The fifth photo features Engine 16, one of the first responders on the scene. The sixth image captures a spare fire engine parked strategically near the action. In the seventh photo, firefighters can be seen working diligently with a hose line at night, their focus evident despite the challenging conditions. The eighth photo documents the aftermath, showing firefighters in overhaul mode after the back porches had burned. Finally, the last photo gives us another view of the intense Chicago fire scene under the cover of darkness.
These images and reports paint a vivid picture of a hectic day for Chicago's firefighters, who worked tirelessly to manage multiple emergencies under less-than-ideal circumstances.
