Larry Shapiro sent over these details about a recent hazardous materials fire in Chicago:
On Monday, July 11, 2016, firefighters in Chicago responded to a Level I hazmat incident at a salvage yard located at 3033 E. 106th Street. The fire burned with intensity, reaching a 2-11 alarm status. Crews from multiple units worked tirelessly for several hours to bring the blaze under control. Among those on the scene were one tower ladder, Squad 5's Snorkel, Engine 2, and several other support vehicles.
The images captured by Shapiro offer a glimpse into the intense firefighting effort required to manage such a challenging situation. In one photo, smoke from the massive fire obscures the sun, highlighting the sheer scale of the incident. Another image shows Engine 2, known as the Christopher Wheatley, actively engaged in the fight against the flames. Other photos capture moments involving Squad 5, the rehab unit, and the use of large-diameter hoses in the street.
The dedication of the Chicago Fire Department is evident throughout these photos, as firefighters worked around the clock to ensure the safety of both their colleagues and nearby residents. This event serves as a reminder of the dangers faced daily by first responders and the critical importance of their training and preparation. As always, our gratitude goes out to all who put themselves in harm's way to protect others.
