Allison Transmission Boosts Electric Trucks to Increase Productivity

In recent years, the SCHERM Group has used pure electric Terberg YT202-EV port tractors with Allison fully automatic transmissions to efficiently distribute materials for the local BMW Group factory.

Ulf Frenzel, fleet manager of the SCHERM Group, said: "The electric truck has demonstrated its strength in urban distribution and helped us to deliver goods to BMW in a smooth and timely manner. The Allison transmission can make full use of this pure electric truck in the best way possible. The power of the motor makes the vehicle easy to control and very easy to drive.”

The pure electric tractors are equipped with a three-phase synchronous motor (614 V) with a maximum power of 138 kW (188 hp) and an Allison 3000 series fully automatic transmission. The Allison automatic transmission is the key to the transmission system: the truck has a combined gross weight of up to 65 tons, and at the same time it needs to start quickly and reach the maximum speed, thereby meeting the urgent delivery schedule requirements. During start-up and acceleration, the torque converter of the transmission doubles the engine torque for quick start-up and acceleration.

In addition, Allison transmissions deliver uninterrupted power, which helps improve vehicle productivity even with smaller engines. Without Allison transmissions, vehicles need to be equipped with more powerful and more expensive engines. The gearbox power take-off (PTO) device helps drive the hydraulic pump, eliminating the need for additional generators.

Frenzel said: "Allison transmissions have proven their reliability and ease of day-to-day operation. In addition, the maintenance time of parking is shorter than that of conventional diesel vehicles, thus increasing productivity and efficiency."

There is a difference of 3 km between the Munich-based BMW plant and the SCHERM logistics centre. The 65-ton electric-powered truck operates on two shifts and operates between the two, and it lasts 8 days a day on Friday. Since it was put into use in 2015, the car has completed more than 3,000 shifts, equivalent to approximately 17,000 kilometers. In the past two years, more than 8,000 liters of diesel have been saved, which is equivalent to a reduction of 22 tons of carbon dioxide.

Frenzel said: "We are really very satisfied with the performance of electric trucks. We want to prove that electric drives can achieve good transport of goods, and as a result we have achieved our goals."

Following SCHERM's successful experience, Elflein Spedition & Transport also began using a similar Allison transmission-powered electric truck in November 2016 for short-haul transportation with the BMW Group plant in Leipzig. Compared with electric trucks used in Munich, the Leipzig car has a higher annual usage rate and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 21 tons per year.
