3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-29-16 (more)

Saturday evening’s incident at the mattress warehouse on the Southwest Side of Chicago was nothing short of chaotic. As I stood there watching the unfolding drama, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of awe and concern for those brave firefighters who were putting their lives on the line. The fire erupted just before 7:40 PM at this four-story warehouse located near South Christiana Avenue and West 48th Place. Within minutes, the situation escalated quickly, prompting the Chicago Fire Department to raise the alarm to a 2-11 status around 8:30 PM and then to a full-blown 3-11 alarm by 9 PM. I remember hearing the radio traffic from the initial callout, which initially reported an auto fire nearby, only for it to be upgraded to a full-scale working fire within moments. It became clear that the fire was aggressive and spreading rapidly through the warehouse, which contained piles of mattresses and foam padding on the first floor. The conditions worsened as heavy rain fell throughout the firefighting operation, making visibility almost impossible and turning the scene into a veritable swamp. The firefighters were relentless despite the challenging conditions. I saw the new TL 39 and TL54 units being deployed with their water buckets low to the ground, aiming their powerful streams deep into the inferno. Alongside them were multiple multiversals and handlines, all contributing to the effort to contain the blaze. It took several hours before the fire was finally brought under control, around 10:45 PM. In the aftermath, two firefighters sustained minor injuries while bravely battling the flames. One was transported to Holy Cross Hospital, while the other was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Thankfully, both are expected to recover fully. The Chicago Tribune reported that the fire is suspected to have been deliberately set, and the Chicago Police Department has since taken over the investigation. As I left the scene that night, I couldn’t help but reflect on the courage of these first responders who face such danger every day. It's a humbling reminder of how vital their work is, even when faced with something as unpredictable and destructive as arson. Attached are some of the photos I managed to capture during the chaos. Despite the weather and the intensity of the fire, you can still see the determination in the faces of the firefighters. Their resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring.
