On Saturday, August 29, 2020, firefighters from Buffalo Grove swiftly responded to a fire that broke out on the third-floor balcony of a residential building at 1541 Johnson Drive. The flames were discovered on the front edge of the balcony, which was the farthest point from the main structure. Due to the potential risk and the need for extensive smoke removal and search operations in the 12-unit, three-story building, the alarm was upgraded to Code 4, calling for additional emergency resources.
Multiple fire departments and emergency services were dispatched to the scene, including Buffalo Grove's Quint 25, Engine 26, Engine 27, Ambulance 26, and Battalion 4, along with chief officers. Additional units from neighboring areas also arrived, such as Long Grove Squad 55, Prospect Heights Engine 39, Wheeling Truck 24, Northbrook Tower 12, Deerfield-Bannockburn Engine 20, Arlington Heights Engine 4, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Battalion 51 and Squad 51, as well as ambulances from Barrington and Hoffman Estates.
Firefighters worked quickly to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of all residents. Although no injuries were reported, the situation required a coordinated effort from multiple agencies to manage the incident effectively. A large E-One ladder truck was seen on site, helping firefighters access the affected area and assist with the operation.
A gallery of photos from the scene is available, featuring images captured by local photographer Larry Shapiro.
