There was a Level 1 Haz Mat incident today at 204 N. Artesian (Artesian and Lake) as People’s Gas was digging and accidentally struck a 4-inch medium-pressure gas line directly beneath the CTA Green Line running along Lake Street. In response, Engine 26, Truck 7, Battalion 12, Squad 2, and the 5-1-1 Hazardous Incident Team were dispatched to the scene. To ensure safety, Engine 26 deployed a 2.5-inch dry line as a precaution, while Battalion 12 coordinated with the CTA to shut down the elevated train for about 15 minutes, allowing People’s Gas to quickly isolate and secure the leaking section of the pipeline.
Dan McInerney shared several photos capturing the event. The first image shows an overview of the scene, featuring representatives from the Chicago Fire Department (CFD), Chicago Police Department (CPD), CTA, and People’s Gas. The second photo highlights Battalion 12, which was in charge of the Still Alarm for the gas leak. Another shot features Engine 26, equipped with a 2.5-inch dry line, standing by as a safety measure. A fourth image showcases the Haz Mat unit 5-1-1 and Squad 2 working side by side under the elevated tracks on Lake Street.
The fifth photo focuses on Engine 26 (D-615), a rare 2003 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson engine known for its distinctive red headlight bezels. Another image captures one of the CTA Emergency Response Units, which are activated city-wide during disruptions to service. Finally, the last photo displays Chicago Truck 7, a 2002 Pierce Dash 100' rear-mount aerial, stationed on Lake Street during the incident. These images provide a detailed look at the coordinated response to the hazardous material event.
