There was a **Level 1 Hazardous Materials incident** today at **204 N. Artesian**, near the intersection of Artesian and Lake Streets. The situation occurred when People’s Gas was excavating and accidentally struck a **4-inch medium-pressure gas line** directly beneath the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Green Line, which runs along Lake Street. In response, several fire and emergency units were dispatched to the scene, including **Engine 26, Truck 7, Battalion 12, Squad 2, and 5-1-1 (Hazardous Incident Team)**.
To ensure safety, **Engine 26** deployed a **2.5-inch dry line** as a precaution. Meanwhile, **Battalion 12** coordinated with the CTA to shut down the elevated train service for about **15 minutes** while People’s Gas quickly isolated and secured the leaking section of the gas line. This swift action helped prevent any potential hazards or further complications.
Dan McInerney shared a series of photos capturing the event, offering a detailed look at the on-scene response.
The first image shows an **overview of the scene**, featuring representatives from the **Chicago Fire Department (CFD), Chicago Police Department (CPD), CTA, and People's Gas**. It highlights the collaborative effort between agencies during the incident.
Another photo features **Battalion 12**, which was in charge of the still alarm for the gas leak. The unit played a critical role in managing the situation and ensuring public safety.
One of the images showcases **Engine 26** standing by with a **dry 2.5-inch line**, emphasizing the importance of preparedness during hazardous material incidents.
A shot of **Haz Mat Unit 5-1-1** and **Squad 2** reveals two specialized units working side-by-side under the CTA tracks. 5-1-1 is one of two 2003 **American LaFrance Eagle/Rescue Master** squads, while Squad 2 is one of three **2000 HME/Central States** units.
Another photo highlights **Engine 26 (D-615)**, a unique 2003 **Spartan Gladiator/Crimson** engine. One notable feature of this unit is its **red-painted headlight bezels**, which are typically chrome.
The final images include a **CTA Emergency Response Unit** equipped with red lights and sirens, designed to respond to city-wide disruptions that affect CTA operations. Also featured is **Truck 7**, a **2002 Pierce Dash** 100' rear-mount aerial, stationed on Lake Street during the incident.
These images provide a vivid account of how different agencies work together to manage hazardous situations efficiently and safely.
