The Future of Work is Now: New Autodesk Certification Program Helps Today’s Workforce Prepare for the Age of Automation

According to the World Economic Forum, up to one billion people will need to reskill by 2030. This growing skills gap is becoming a major challenge across all industries. For years, businesses have been struggling with an aging workforce and a shortage of younger workers entering their fields, resulting in unfilled positions. Add to that the rise of automation, which is creating new job roles and increasing the demand for updated skills, and it's clear that the need for continuous learning has never been greater.

To meet this demand, Autodesk is committed to developing lifelong learning solutions that help professionals stay competitive. The future of work is here, and automation is now a standard part of many industries. Our goal is to equip customers with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in this evolving landscape.

Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of the Autodesk Certification Program. This initiative includes eight new industry-focused learning pathways and certifications designed to support professionals on their journey toward continuous growth. More certifications and courses will be added in the coming year. These programs are tailored to help both emerging and experienced professionals build, validate, and showcase their skills, enabling them to reach their career goals.

The program offers certifications for specific products, such as “Revit Structure,” as well as role-based credentials like “Fusion 360 Mechanical Design” for engineers and machinists. As industries evolve, so will our offerings, ensuring that workers always have access to the most relevant and up-to-date training available.

For over 15 years, Autodesk has collaborated with workforce training centers to provide product-specific certifications through in-person exams. However, as technology and automation continue to reshape careers, we recognized the urgent need to modernize our learning and certification strategies. I recently spoke with Jaime Perkins, who leads learning strategy at Autodesk, about how we're rethinking certification in this new era.

“We see how technologies like AI are transforming the industries we serve, and these changes are significantly impacting workers. When the pandemic hit, we saw an 800% increase in traffic to our self-paced learning resources, which made it clear that it was time to accelerate our efforts. With this new platform, we’re taking a fresh approach to certification—one that integrates skill development into daily work, connects learners to a broader community, and supports a lifelong learning journey.”

The new Autodesk Certification Program is designed to be flexible and self-paced. Users can access the single sign-on platform anytime, making it easy to learn on their own schedule.

Role-based certifications reflect real-world job needs

As our tools are used more frequently in different roles, it’s becoming clear that not every user needs to master every feature. That’s why our new role-based certifications focus on specific job functions rather than just product features. For example, instead of certifying someone on the entire Fusion 360 software, we now offer certifications tailored to roles like mechanical engineer or machinist.

These certifications allow workers to demonstrate their expertise in ways that employers value. Initially, the role-based path will focus on Fusion 360, covering core workflows such as CAD, CAM, design for manufacturing, and even the industry’s first generative design certification.

Learning paths lead to both certification and long-term success

With the Autodesk Certification Program, we’ve created modular, self-paced learning paths that guide users from start to finish. We understand that everyone learns differently, so the program is designed to accommodate various skill levels, job roles, and career goals. Whether you're building foundational skills, preparing for an exam, or exploring new workflows, there's something for everyone.

Upon completing courses or earning a certification, learners receive digital badges that can be shared on resumes, portfolios, and professional networks. This helps them stand out in the job market and prove their capabilities to potential employers.

Supporting businesses with scalable training solutions

Last year, we partnered with Monitor Deloitte to better understand the challenges behind the skills gap and how to help workers adapt in an automated world. One key takeaway was that companies need to bridge the gap between learning and work by embedding training directly into the workplace. However, many businesses lack the infrastructure to support large-scale training programs.

Autodesk certifications and learning pathways offer a scalable solution for businesses looking to reskill their current workforce. By providing timely, relevant training, companies can ensure their employees are equipped to handle new responsibilities and keep their organizations competitive. Additionally, industry certifications help companies make more informed hiring decisions by identifying candidates with proven skills.

Reskilling is essential for economic resilience

As remote work and safety protocols continue due to the ongoing pandemic, the use of digital tools and automation is accelerating. This means that new skill sets are becoming increasingly important for professionals and job seekers alike. Reskilling and upskilling, along with digital transformation, are critical to the global economy’s future success.

As part of our commitment to supporting the future workforce, Autodesk will match donations to Humanmade for every Fusion 360 user who successfully completes one of our new certifications after AU. Humanmade’s Next Generation Manufacturing Program is dedicated to training low-income residents in the San Francisco Bay Area for the jobs of tomorrow.

Automation is a powerful tool that helps businesses and societies meet the demands of a growing, urbanizing world. While it brings disruption, it also creates opportunities. At Autodesk, we believe it’s our responsibility to help workers adapt and thrive in this changing environment. Our new certification program is just one way we’re supporting lifelong learning for the most in-demand skills of the future—building a resilient, fair, and prosperous workforce for tomorrow.
