Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
(Word count: 540)Residents in the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District are set to see a significant drop in their property tax bills following the approval of a record-breaking $1.2 million tax abatement—the largest in the district’s history and one of the most substantial local abatements in recent years.
The decision was made by the district board last week, reflecting a growing effort to address rising concerns over property taxes among residents. While it's still too early to determine the exact savings for individual households, a similar abatement of $300,000 from the previous year led to an approximate $75 reduction per household on average.
The district covers unincorporated areas between Waukegan and Gurnee, stretching westward to Grayslake. It serves around 3,300 homes and structures, with Park City also included, even though it is an incorporated city.
Through smart financial planning and collaboration with Gurnee, the district has managed to turn its finances around. Just 15 years ago, it was running an annual deficit of about $800,000. Today, it maintains healthy cash reserves that make such a large abatement possible.
Expanding Gurnee’s service area has also allowed the fire department to access new grants and funding opportunities it previously couldn’t qualify for. This partnership has not only improved emergency response but also strengthened the district’s long-term financial stability.
Over the years, the district has invested in multiple ambulances, fire engines, and even contributed half the cost of Gurnee’s latest ladder truck. Additionally, more than a decade ago, the district passed a resolution ensuring no resident would face out-of-pocket costs for ambulance services.
