(Word count: 502)Residents of the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District are in for a welcome surprise as the district recently approved a record-breaking $1.2 million tax abatement, marking the largest in its history and one of the most significant local tax reductions in recent years.
The decision, made by the district board last week, is a direct response to growing concerns about rising property taxes. While it's still too early to determine the exact savings for each household, a similar abatement of $300,000 last year led to an average tax reduction of about $75 per family. This new move is expected to bring similar relief to thousands of residents.
The district covers a wide area, including unincorporated regions between Waukegan and Gurnee, extending as far west as Grayslake. It serves approximately 3,300 homes and structures, with Park City also falling under its jurisdiction, even though it’s an incorporated town.
This partnership has been key to the district’s financial turnaround. A decade ago, the district was running annual deficits of around $800,000. Through smart budgeting and strategic collaboration with Gurnee, it has now built up substantial cash reserves, making this major abatement possible.
Expanding the Gurnee Fire Department’s service area has also opened up new opportunities for funding. By increasing the department’s eligibility, the district has helped Gurnee access grants that would otherwise be out of reach.
In addition to supporting the fire department financially, the district has invested in critical emergency equipment. It has purchased multiple ambulances, fire engines, and even covered half the cost of Gurnee’s latest ladder truck. More than ten years ago, the district also passed a resolution ensuring that no resident would face out-of-pocket costs for ambulance services.
