The color of fire trucks (part 6)

Jeff Rudolph is helping us stay accurate and honest with our historical records. Recently, he reminded us of some fire departments that had non-red units, which weren't included in our previous posts about MABAS Division 3 and MABAS Division 4. These additions are important to ensure a complete and correct historical account. **MABAS Division 4 Additions:** The Abbott Labs Fire Department in North Chicago operated a 1978 Darley foam pumper on a Ford C-8000 chassis. This unit carried 500 gallons of water, 20 gallons of foam, and featured a 750-GPM pump. The vehicle was originally lime green before being repainted. Bill Friedrich captured this image. Before transitioning to red, the Abbott Labs Fire Department had two lime green engines and a van. Their fleet reflected a unique color scheme that was later changed. The Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District, now known as the Beach Park Fire Department, once had a variety of vehicles, including a brush truck, a tanker, an engine, a squad, and a van—all painted in lime green. This particular tanker was built by Boyer on a Ford L8000 chassis. Larry Shapiro documented this piece of history. Another notable addition from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District was an FMC Roughneck engine mounted on a Spartan chassis with a CFC cab. Jeff Rudolph shared this photo, highlighting the district's diverse fleet, which also included two white CF Mack engines. **MABAS Division 3 Additions:** Evanston Fire Department acquired two yellow International/Hendrickson Howe engines in 1974. Each was equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and a 300-gallon water tank. These units were initially assigned as Engine 23 and 24 before being repainted red. Photographer details are unknown, but the images are part of Jeff Rudolph’s collection. Highwood Fire Department used a retired American LaFrance engine from Northbrook as a reserve unit. Originally designated Engine 60 in Northbrook, it was later reconfigured and used by Highwood. It had a 1,000-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. Jeff Rudolph captured this vehicle during its time in service. In 1981, Winnetka Fire Department acquired a small "DOT" rescue unit from Pierce, mounted on a Chevy chassis. This vehicle was funded through federal grants and painted lime green to meet transportation specifications. Eventually, it was repainted red and white, reflecting the department’s evolving identity. Jeff Rudolph documented this unit as well. These additions not only enrich our understanding of regional fire apparatus but also highlight how departments evolved over time—both in terms of equipment and aesthetics.
