The color of fire trucks (part 6)

Jeff Rudolph is helping us stay accurate and honest with our historical records. Recently, he pointed out some fire departments that had non-red units which weren’t included in our previous posts about MABAS Division 3 and MABAS Division 4. His input has been invaluable in ensuring we reflect the true history of these departments. **MABAS Division 4 Additions:** One notable addition comes from the Abbott Labs Fire Department in North Chicago. They once operated a 1978 Darley foam pumper mounted on a Ford C-8000 chassis. This unit carried 500 gallons of water, 20 gallons of foam, and featured a 750-GPM pump. The photo, taken by Bill Friedrich, shows the vehicle in its original lime green color. Before transitioning to red, the Abbott Labs Fire Department had two lime green engines and a van. These early units give us a glimpse into the department’s past before their modernization. Another important piece of history comes from the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District, now known as the Beach Park Fire Department. They once had a tanker built by Boyer on a Ford L8000 chassis. This vehicle, captured in a photo by Larry Shapiro, was part of a fleet that included a brush truck, an engine, a squad, and a van—all originally painted in lime green before the switch to red. The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District also had a unique unit—a Spartan/FMC Roughneck engine equipped with a CFC cab. This vehicle, photographed by Jeff Rudolph, was one of several engines owned by the district, which also included two white CF Mack engines. **MABAS Division 3 Additions:** Evanston Fire Department had two 1974 International/Hendrickson Howe engines that were originally bright yellow. Each was equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and a 300-gallon water tank. These units, assigned as Engine 23 and 24, were later repainted red. Although the photographer remains unknown, the images are part of Jeff Rudolph’s collection. Highwood Fire Department used a retired American LaFrance engine from Northbrook as a reserve unit. This 1969 model, originally designated as Engine 60 in Northbrook, had a 1,000-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water capacity. The rear body work was completed while it was still under Northbrook’s ownership. Winnetka Fire Department acquired a small "DOT" rescue unit from Pierce in 1981. Purchased with federal funding, this rescue was painted lime green to meet DOT specifications. It was later repainted red and white, reflecting the department’s evolving identity over time. These additions highlight the importance of preserving historical details, especially when it comes to the colors and equipment of fire departments that have since changed. Thanks to Jeff Rudolph's efforts, we're able to provide more accurate and comprehensive information for our readers.
