Another department in MABAS Division 12 has recently been added to the website. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District is a small but well-equipped department that operates out of a single station. Covering an area of 2.5 square miles, they rely on a mix of full-time and part-time firefighters to serve their community. Their station is packed with a variety of equipment, including two fire engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and a utility pickup. Recently, they introduced a brand new Spartan/Marion engine, marking a shift from their traditional white-over-red rigs to a black-over-red color scheme.
Previously, the department operated two E-ONE engines and a tower ladder, along with Medtec-built ambulances. The introduction of this new engine shows the department’s commitment to modernization while maintaining their strong local identity. The station itself is a hub of activity, reflecting the dedication of its personnel and the importance of their role in the community.
Chicago is often credited as the birthplace of the Snorkel in fire service, and the city once had a large number of these aerial devices. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District was no exception, and before acquiring their E-ONE 95-foot tower ladder in 1991, they had a unique 85-foot Snorkel mounted on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This was one of the few Snorkels in the region not built on a Ford C-Series, International cab-over, or custom chassis, making it a rare and interesting piece of fire apparatus history.

This 1964, 85' Pitman Snorkel preceded the E-ONE tower ladder in Oak Brook Terrace. Shown here at their old station, the body was built by Pierce on a GMC 7000 chassis with a V-12 engine.
