On Friday, a fire broke out at a residential home located at 948 N. Homan on Chicago’s west side. Dan McInerney was in the city and witnessed the incident. He arrived after the flames had been largely extinguished and captured several photos along with a detailed account of the response. According to his notes, shortly after the Main Fire Alarm dispatched Engine 12 to the scene, Engine 4-4-11 arrived and requested an emergency still and box due to heavy fire in a 1.5-story house that was endangering a similar structure in Sector 4. The first arriving engine, E44, quickly deployed a hose line on the first floor, while Truck 36 performed primary and roof ventilation. However, the initial search found no one inside, as the house turned out to be vacant. Engine E95, the second due, moved west on Augusta Avenue and brought their hose line to the rear of the structure. Meanwhile, Truck 14 conducted a search of the adjacent building and also carried out roof ventilation. Engine E76, the third due, advanced a line into the exposure building to prevent further spread. The fire department worked swiftly under challenging conditions, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. Firefighters were seen resting and rehydrating after the intense effort. Photos show Engine 44 with one line deployed, Truck 36 preparing its ladders, and Engine 76 using a hydrant to supply water. A command vehicle was parked nearby, and firefighters were seen repacking hoses and preparing for the next stage of operations. The event highlighted the coordinated efforts of multiple units responding to a rapidly developing situation.
