Multi-vehicle, multi-victim MVA in Wheeling 3-28-13

A multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer occurred on the westbound express lanes of Palatine Road near 5:50 PM on Thursday. The incident, which took place just east of Wheeling Road, involved six cars and the semi-truck. Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments responded to the scene, but access was limited due to heavy traffic with no shoulder available. As a result, emergency crews had to navigate using the frontage road or travel against the flow of traffic on the expressway. Two individuals were rescued from their vehicles using hydraulic tools, and five ambulances arrived on the scene to assess the injured. However, only three patients were transported to local hospitals, as many drivers and passengers declined treatment at the location. In addition to the ambulances, two battalion chiefs, one fire truck, one squad, and three engine companies were dispatched to manage the situation. The westbound lanes remained closed for much of the night while investigators worked to clear the scene and determine the cause of the crash. Emergency responders faced significant challenges due to the number of vehicles involved and the tight space in which they had to operate.
