Breaking news from Austin and Rogers Park: Two separate incidents involving fire and carbon monoxide poisoning have made headlines in Chicago this week.
The Chicago Tribune reported on a Still & Box Alarm fire that occurred in the South Austin neighborhood early Tuesday morning. According to authorities, a woman jumped from a second-floor window during the blaze, while three others were injured. “When we arrived, there was one woman who jumped from the second floor,†said Deputy Chief Don Hroma of the Chicago Fire Department. The 30-year-old woman was taken to John H. Troger, Jr. Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, and two teenage girls and a man were hospitalized with fair-to-serious injuries. Meanwhile, a tragic incident unfolded in West Rogers Park on Sunday when two women died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The first call came in after two residents fell ill at an apartment building on West North Shore Avenue. Initial tests by fire officials showed low levels of carbon monoxide, which were not considered dangerous. However, about five hours later, another resident became ill, prompting firefighters to return to the scene.
This time, dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the basement. Rasheeda Akhter, 77, and her granddaughter Zanib Ahmed, 18, later died at Swedish Covenant Hospital. The Cook County medical examiner confirmed the cause of death as carbon monoxide poisoning. Fire officials and Peoples Gas workers discovered that the building’s furnace had malfunctioning boilers and a leaking exhaust system. “Fresh air was coming into the basement, but the bad air was going upstairs into the house,†said Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford.
