The Chicago Tribune recently published an article detailing a significant fire that broke out on Saturday night in the South Side of Chicago, specifically on the 7900 block of South Colfax Avenue. The incident, which escalated to an extra-alarm level, resulted in two firefighters being injured and damage to three homes in the neighborhood.
According to Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, the fire was reported around 11:45 p.m. and quickly became a serious situation. "We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out," Flynn explained. "A couple of members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11."
The 2-11 alarm and mayday alert brought additional firefighters and equipment to the scene. For a brief moment, two firefighters went missing, but they were soon located after the team regrouped. In addition, an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was activated, sending five ambulances to the location to assist with any injuries.
Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. personally visited the scene and captured several images that highlight the intensity of the operation. These photos show firefighters working under challenging conditions, including snow and icy surfaces. One image features Engine 126 with multiple lines deployed, while another captures firefighters using a tower ladder to tackle hot spots in the attic. Another photo shows a firefighter adjusting his breathing apparatus after exiting the building, clearly affected by the harsh environment.
Additionally, two battalion chiefs are seen monitoring the situation from the sidelines, ensuring coordination and safety throughout the operation. As the fire was brought under control, crews began breaking down their attack lines, showing the effort and teamwork involved in such high-stress incidents.
