According to Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, the fire was reported around 11:45 p.m. The situation quickly became dangerous, forcing firefighters to evacuate the area due to unsafe conditions. At one point, two firefighters went missing, prompting a mayday call and the activation of a 2-11 alarm, which brought additional personnel and equipment to the scene.
"Several members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11," Flynn explained. "We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out." Fortunately, the two firefighters were located shortly after, once the team regrouped. In addition to the fire department's efforts, five ambulances from the Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene as part of a Plan 1 response.
Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. personally visited the location and captured several powerful images documenting the operation. These photos show firefighters working under challenging conditions, including snow-covered streets and icy environments. One image features Engine 126 with multiple lines deployed, while another highlights Tower Ladder 34 tackling hot spots in the attic. A firefighter is also seen adjusting his SCBA after emerging from the burning structure, clearly showing the physical toll of the incident.
Two battalion chiefs were observed monitoring the scene closely, ensuring coordination and safety throughout the operation. As the fire was brought under control, crews began breaking down their attack lines, signaling the end of the intense firefighting effort.
