Why fake fertilizer is so flooded?

Why do fake products exist in the agricultural input market? There are several key reasons behind this issue: First, the pursuit of profit drives manufacturers to produce counterfeit goods. For example, a compound fertilizer manufacturer with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons may intentionally produce 40,000 tons of fake fertilizer. Instead of the labeled content of 15-15-15, they might only include 15-5-10, significantly reducing the amount of expensive raw materials. If the cost of producing each ton of genuine product is around 40 yuan, but the fake version uses cheaper ingredients and costs 600 yuan per ton, the profit margin becomes much higher. By producing 40,000 tons of fake fertilizer, the company could make an additional 24 million yuan in one year. Second, dealers and retailers are also motivated by profit to sell fake products. Take Zhang San and Li Si, two sellers on the same street. They both sell similar granulated fertilizer with the same label—15-15-15—but different manufacturers. However, one day, a supplier offers Zhang San a deal: he can sell fertilizer that’s actually 15-5-10 at a lower price. This allows him to make an extra 400 yuan per ton. Compared to the usual 10–15 yuan profit per bag, selling fakes brings in 30 yuan per bag. When farmers come into the store, Zhang San confidently promotes the fake product, making them believe it's high quality, which leads to more sales and greater profits. Third, some regulators turn a blind eye to fake products due to personal interests. Unqualified products should not be sold, and if found, they must be recalled or corrected before being put back on the market. However, in many cases, law enforcement agencies prioritize financial gain over public interest. If a product is found to be substandard, instead of informing customers, they might simply accept a bribe and allow the product to stay on the shelves. I’ve never seen any real action taken against such violations, even after years of experience in the field. Fourth, crop performance often lags, making it hard for farmers to notice the difference between real and fake fertilizers. For instance, when comparing 15-15-15 and 15-13-13 fertilizers, the crops may look similar at first glance. Experienced sellers know this and may strategically promote fake products during certain seasons while using real ones later. For example, a farmer named Wang Laowu might promote fake fertilizer in March and switch to real fertilizer in April, ensuring continued sales without immediate complaints. From an internal perspective, there are also four main reasons why counterfeit products continue to spread: First, many farmers lack the knowledge and tools to identify fake products. Most rely on visual cues like color, texture, or solubility, which are not reliable indicators of quality. Without professional training or testing equipment, they are easily deceived. Second, some farmers are tempted by low prices. The saying goes, “From Nanjing to Beijing, no one buys good things cheap.” If a product is priced much lower than others, it raises questions. But many farmers, eager to save money, overlook these red flags. Third, some farmers have limited understanding of how to spot fake products. Those with less knowledge or experience are especially vulnerable to being misled by unscrupulous sellers. Fourth, some farmers trust shop owners completely, relying on their recommendations. Unfortunately, this can lead to buying fake products, as some sellers take advantage of their trust for personal gain. In conclusion, the existence of fake products in the agricultural market is driven by a combination of greed, lack of awareness, and weak regulation. Addressing this issue requires better education, stronger oversight, and more transparency in the supply chain.
